Tranlin, Inc., the U.S. subsidiary of a leading Chinese pulp and paper company, officially broke ground today on its first U.S. operation, a $2 billion advanced manufacturing facility. Tranlin’s investment is located in Chesterfield, Virginia, and will generate more than 2,000 direct jobs in Virginia by 2020.

Tranlin Groundbreaking Governor McAuliffe

“The Tranlin facility in Chesterfield will create thousands of jobs and millions in new agriculture revenues, all of which will support our shared vision for a stronger new Virginia Economy. I am thrilled to help break ground on a project that will have enormous economic development implications for our entire Commonwealth,” said Governor McAuliffe about the project.

2015-10-22-Tranlin-Groundbreaking-01

Tranlin’s Chesterfield County facility will use the company’s innovative, proprietary technology to produce tree-free, natural color, straw fiber paper tissue products made exclusively from agricultural field waste such as wheat straw and corn stalks. In addition, Tranlin will produce humus-based organic fertilizer products using residues from the papermaking process.

Tranlin-Products

Environmental sustainability is deeply embedded in Tranlin’s culture and guides the company’s ongoing pursuit of innovation and technological advancement. Tranlin’s products are a positive contribution to both American consumers and the agricultural sector. The company’s manufacturing process is referred to as the “Golden Circle” because the straw paper manufacturing process creates a fully renewable and sustainable loop:

At the top of the circle, agricultural byproducts such as wheat and corn stalks are used as raw material to make paper products that include bath, kitchen, facial and travel tissue, as well as tableware. Then residues from the papermaking process are refined into highly effective, humus-based organic fertilizer. The circle is complete when this fertilizer is ultimately used to grow crops, often requiring less water, chemical fertilizer, and pesticides than traditional fertilizers.

“We are even more confident now than we were a year ago that our project is being built on a solid foundation that will allow it to be successful in Chesterfield, Virginia,” said Hongfa Li, the Chairman and President of Shandong Tranlin Paper Company Limited. “After another year of extraordinary work by
the entire Tranlin team and many supportive friends in Virginia, we know that all the key factors including environmental, legal, cultural, market, engineering and human resources are in place.”

Tranlin-Groundbreaking-1080p

“We are so excited to be embarking on this next phase of our work together in Virginia, and more importantly, we are so grateful of and encouraged by the supportive community in Chesterfield and Virginia,” said Jerry Peng, the Chairman and CEO of Tranlin, Inc.. “We will continue the close collaboration with all the stakeholders here. It is our goal to build a very sustainable partnership with the local community, the farming sector and our vendors. Over the past year we have built an excellent core team who have driven the project this far. We expect to accelerate our recruiting and project development.”

“The groundbreaking ceremony symbolizes next chapter of development for Shandong Tranlin,” said Xuanyu Zhang, Deputy Mayor of Liaocheng, Shandong, where Shandong Tranlin Paper Company Limited is headquartered in China, “We sincerely hope the Tranlin US project will become a showcase of cooperation between China and US that benefits us both.” Mr. Zhang is in Virginia leading a senior delegation from Liaocheng with both key municipal government officers and entrepreneurs who attended the groundbreaking, and signed a Sister City-County MOU between Liaocheng, Shandong and Chesterfield, Virginia at a luncheon in Chesterfield celebrating the Tranlin Project groundbreaking.
Mr. ZHU Hong, Minister for Commercial Affairs of Chinese Embassy in the U.S., also lead the senior delegation to the groundbreaking ceremony and made an enthusiastic speech to the audience.

Tranlin-Groundbreaking-Straw-on-Truck

Tranlin’s purchase of stalks and straw from corn and small grain producers creates a new market for agricultural residuals that are typically left in the field as waste. Based on the agricultural supply chain opportunities associated with the project, the economic benefit to farmers in this region alone could exceed $50 million per year once the company is operating at full capacity. Tranlin has already begun working with many farmers in the region to procure needed agricultural products for manufacturing operations.

Dorothy Jaeckle and Steve Elswick, Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors

“We are excited to celebrate with Tranlin as they break ground on the first phase of this historic project. The 2,000 jobs that will be created by this facility will have a transformative effect on the Jefferson Davis Corridor, the County and the entire region. We will continue to work diligently with our partners at the state, regional, and local levels to support Tranlin as they endeavor to manufacture their innovative products here in Chesterfield County while staying focused on the environment and sustainability,” said Steve Elswick, Chairman of the Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors.

Tranlin Groundbreaking

Tranlin’s presence in the market will also help preserve farmland by providing farmers a new opportunity to derive additional economic return from their land and equipment, creating positive economic incentives to maintain it in farming use. The harvest of straw in the spring and corn stalks in the fall for use by Tranlin will be two new cash crops for Virginia growers, in addition to other fibrous products from the surrounding area.

About Tranlin, Inc.

Tranlin, Inc. is the U.S. subsidiary of Shandong Tranlin Paper Co., Ltd., a leading Chinese pulp and paper company that applies innovative proprietary technologies to produce straw fiber, unbleached paper products and superior organic fertilizers.
Tranlin is investing $2 billion to construct an advanced manufacturing facility in Chesterfield County, Virginia that will create 2,000 jobs in the region by 2020. The facility will utilize straw purchased from the region’s farmers to produce two product lines using leading environmentally friendly engineering methods:

  • High quality facial and bath tissue, paper towels and napkins that are straw-fiber based, chlorine-free and compostable
  • Fertilizer with a high concentration of fulvic acid, suitable for commercial farmers and home gardeners seeking organic solutions for improved crop yields and quality, soil restoration and environmental benefits.

Tranlin brings sustainable manufacturing, advanced technologies and a naturally responsible focus on the environment from China to the banks of the James River.

Loud-and-Clear-1If you ask the owners of Selah!, LLC, Temple Image and CleanNGoFast, LLC, they will tell you that the library’s Small Business Resource Center was instrumental in them starting and maintaining their businesses.

“At one time our computers were down and we didn’t have the money to get them fixed; so we started to use the library computer,” said Dion Roseboro. Dion and his twin brother Derek began using the library in 2008 to help launch their cleaning business. When they were hit by the bad economy, they took advantage of the Small Business Resource Center to get back on their feet.

“The library was very helpful,” said Dion. “We used the library’s computer to develop our website, develop our brochures, the marketing information, business letterheads, business cards, everything,” said Derek.

CCPL’s Small Business Resource Center has become an integral part of the library system. The goal is to be a one-stop shop for business owners or aspiring entrepreneurs. The center offers a wide variety of resources, including scanners, printers, computers, specialized books, programs and workshops. Customers can also make appointments with experts for one-on- one assistance and receive information tailored to their needs.

“You get a lot done, you meet people, and you’re exposed to classes: just by coming here you get access to many resources,” said Delores Klyvert, owner of Temple Image. Delores’ company conducts paternity tests and provides health and wellness education. Delores says as the owner of a home-based business, there are distractions, and the library provides a place for her to focus and get the job done.

CCPL continues to expand its offerings in response to customers’ needs. The library partners with experts in business creation, such as Greater Richmond GATE and RVAworks. SHiRL, owner of Selah, LLC, a company that provides support for female veterans, attended one of the library’s RVAworks workshops.

“I went through two entrepreneurial programs and out of those two programs, I fine-tuned what I wanted to do,” said SHiRL. “If I didn’t have the Small Business Resource Center, I would be totally lost.”

Small business in America makes a substantial contribution to our local and national economy. Entrepreneur Magazine indicates that there are between 25 and 27 million small businesses in the U.S. today. Small businesses, classified as 500 or fewer employees, may be small in comparison to large corporations, but their impact is big. According to the Small Business Administration, small businesses today:

  • account for 54% of U.S. sales
  • provide 55% of all jobs and 64% of new jobs
  • pay 44% of the total U.S. private payroll
  • occupy 30-50% of all commercial space, an estimated 20-34 billion square feet
  • are trusted by 86% of Americans who believe they are “a great deal”

Over the past 25 years, small businesses have added 8 million new jobs, while big businesses have eliminated 4 million jobs. Small businesses bring growth and innovation; help large corporations through outsourcing; respond and adapt quickly to changes in economic climates; stay afloat during tough times and contribute revenue directly to the local community. This revenue supports libraries, schools, parks, public safety, etc., and leads to healthier, more stable communities.

Small-Business-Center-Meadowbrook-Library

To help small businesses in Chesterfield County, Meadowdale Library features a Small Business Resource Center, operated by CCPL in conjunction with the county department of Economic Development. This service has allowed us to help hundreds of local residents develop and manage a wide variety of small business interests. The Small Business Resource Center offers professional researchers, a wide variety of research resources and meeting rooms with office tools. The success of the Meadowdale business center has inspired us to plan for small business centers to be added at other libraries in the coming year.

CCPL can help you in any quest to transform information into usable knowledge. Whether you are starting a business, growing your business, or increasing your skills and knowledge, we are here for you. We look forward to seeing you in one of our libraries and helping you take learning to the next level.

Chesterfield County’s “Sports Tourism Support to Business” program was named the “Best in Category” at the 2015 NACo Achievement Awards.

2015-NACo-Award

Dale District Supervisor, Jim Holland, and Assistant County Administrator, Lou Lassiter, were present at the ceremony to accept the award.

Sports tourism activity in Chesterfield County has grown exponentially in recent years, spawned as a result of new public and private facilities which host major regional and national tournaments.

Hotels across the region are “sold out” and outside dollars are spread across the community. Yet in the early years of the expanded activity, local businesses were not prepared to take advance of the opportunities presented by the increase in out-of-town visitation.

A major outreach effort – which has expanded over the past three years — was developed to assist businesses to handle the influx of visitors, increase sales, and provide a favorable visitor experience for guests.

More than 400 area businesses across the Richmond region were personally visited by community “foot patrols.”

Owners and managers were encouraged to “Welcome, Staff Up, and Entice” the sports visitors, as well as offer online discounts and promotions at no cost to the business.

Social media campaigns, website tournament landing pages and on-site visitor services provided additional support to visitors and tournament organizers.

The Sports Tourism Support to Business program has greatly enhanced communications with the business and sports tourism community.

In its continuous pursuit of innovation, Engel noted that Evonik has established strong relationships with leading universities, around the world. “Here in Richmond, we are collaborating with Virginia Commonwealth University,” Engel said. “We are participating in a design project for process sustainability with VCU’s Engineering College and we are actively engaged with one-on-one discussions with renowned professors.”

Evonik’s Richmond Business and Innovation Center is a major benefit to the Greater Richmond area, added David DelGuercio, senior vice president and general manager, Evonik Nutrition & Care, North America.

“Rather than build an Innovation Center elsewhere, Evonik purchased a vacant 96,000 square foot structure here and transformed it into a state-of-the art Business and Innovation Center,” DelGuercio said. “We expect to grow and add 50 jobs over the next five years. In addition, by locating the Center in the Greater Richmond area, Evonik preserved 125 local full-time jobs.”

Evonik’s Richmond Business and Innovation Center Lab

With the new facility, Evonik more than doubles its laboratory and commercial space in the Greater Richmond area. The center combines innovative research and development, marketing, sales, customer service, and support functions such as environment safety and health, procurement, controlling, human resources, and information technology in one facility to foster collaboration, networking and creativity.

Evonik believes innovation is performed by people — not by processes, projects or machines, added DelGuercio. “The company believes the keys to innovation are creativity, courage and team spirit,” he said. “The innovation culture of a company determines how fast employees are able to drive forward good ideas and convert them into a profitable business. The Richmond Business and Innovation Center will play an integral part in this.”

With around 500 projects in its innovation pipeline, Evonik is already one of the world’s most innovative companies.

Evonik participates in the American Chemistry Council‘s Responsible Care program and is certified to the RC 14001 standards and practices in environmental, health, safety, security, product safety and process safety management.

The Boneyard Butcher & Seafood Shop, 12406 Southshore Pointe Drive, in the Shops at Southshore on Hull Street Road, celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon cutting on May 15, 2015. Food, refreshments and festivities followed the ribbon cutting event.

The Boneyard Butcher & Seafood Shop is an old-style butcher shop, reminiscent of an era before shoppers bought all of their groceries at mega-supermarkets. They will sell high-end cuts of meats and seafood, including live lobsters. The shop will also sell some prepared foods and steam items to order.

2015-05-05-Boneyard-Ribbon-Cutting-038

Chris Tavenner, the shop’s owner, plans to set himself apart by providing first-class, Ukrop’s-style customer service in a location where the nearest competition is Walmart and Food Lion. “Opening our first store, we wanted to find a niche,” Tavenner said. “We looked at Midlothian Turnpike and the West End, but those places already had specialty stores.”

“We are very pleased that The Boneyard Butcher & Seafood Shop has chosen Chesterfield County for their first location,” said Art Warren, Clover Hill District Supervisor and vice chairman of Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors. “It’s rewarding to see our business community grow and their location decision is a testament to our strong business climate.”

Has Played Major Role in County’s Record Success

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VIRGINIA — Chesterfield County named H. Garrett Hart III its new economic development director today at a Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce luncheon held at the Sheraton Richmond to honor Will Davis, who is retiring from the post. Hart, a nine-year member of the county’s economic development team and currently its assistant director for new business development, will assume the lead role July 1.

Hart said he plans to continue Davis’ strong legacy. Under Davis’ leadership, the Economic Development Department recorded $3.2 billion in new capital investments and 8,200 new jobs. Hart has played a significant role in that growth.

“During Garrett’s tenure with Chesterfield, the county experienced the most successful era for growth of business, jobs and investment,” County Administrator Jay Stegmaier said. “When you look at major projects that came to the county over that period you will find Garrett’s fingerprints on all of them.”

Hart’s selection followed an international search that resulted in 23 total applicants from seven states and three countries, including Canada, Samoa and the U.S. A five-member panel comprised of public- and private-sector representatives interviewed seven applicants.

“I want to thank Will Davis, Jay Stegmaier, other county leaders, the selection committee and the Board of Supervisors for their work during the selection process and for having confidence in me,” Garrett said. “I look forward to working with my fellow county colleagues and the Chesterfield business and development communities to continue to make Chesterfield one of the best places for business in the country.”
