Plenty Richmond Farm will exclusively grow Driscoll’s strawberries, creating year-round local supply to drive category growth in top U.S. berry region.

Plenty LogoToday, Plenty Unlimited Inc. opened the world’s first farm to grow indoor, vertically farmed berries at scale. Plenty farms are the most technologically advanced farms in the world – removing the unpredictability of Mother Nature and making it possible to grow produce with peak-season flavor, year-round, almost anywhere in the world.

The Plenty Richmond Farm is designed to produce more than 4 million pounds of strawberries annually in less than 40,000 square feet by growing vertically on 30-foot-tall towers. The farm will exclusively grow Driscoll’s strawberries, combining Plenty’s advanced technology with global premium berry leader Driscoll’s advanced genetics. The first strawberries from the farm will be available in early 2025.

“With agriculture serving as the Commonwealth’s largest private sector industry, Plenty choosing Virginia for the world’s first farm to grow indoor, vertically farmed berries at scale reinforces Virginia’s leading role in the controlled environment agriculture industry,” said Governor Glenn Youngkin. “Plenty’s farm will boost local agriculture production and drive economic development, all while diversifying against risks and protecting the environment. We look forward to supporting their innovative approaches to revolutionizing the industry, and know that Plenty’s success will be Virginia’s success.”

While most vertical farms are limited to lettuces, Plenty spent the past decade designing a patent-pending, modular growing system flexible enough to support a wide variety of crops – including strawberries.

Growing on vertical towers enables uniform delivery of nutrients, superior airflow and more intense lighting, delivering increased yield with consistent quality.

Every element of the Plenty Richmond Farm–including temperature, light and humidity–is precisely controlled through proprietary software to create the perfect environment for the strawberry plants to thrive.

The farm uses AI to analyze more than 10 million data points each day across its 12 grow rooms, adapting each grow room’s environment to the evolving needs of the plants – creating the perfect environment for Driscoll’s proprietary plants to thrive and optimizing the strawberries’ flavor, texture and size.

Even pollination has been engineered by Plenty, using a patent-pending method that evenly distributes controlled airflow across the strawberry flowers for more efficient and effective pollination than using bees, supporting more uniform strawberry size and shape.

Plenty Worker“This farm is a model for the positive impact climate-agnostic agriculture can have, and proof that vertical farming can deliver the crop diversity, scaled and local production needed to future-proof the global food system,” said Arama Kukutai, Plenty CEO. “The Plenty Richmond Farm is the culmination of 200 research trials over the past six years to perfect growing strawberries with consistent peak-season flavor indoors year-round. Driscoll’s sets an incredibly high bar for the quality of its berries and we’re excited to join forces to consistently deliver an ultra-premium Driscoll’s strawberry year-round.”

The Plenty Richmond Farm brings year-round production of fresh produce within a one-day drive of more than 100 million consumers. Growing locally reduces food miles and food waste, and the farm itself uses 97 percent less land and up to 90 percent less water than conventional farming.

Driscolls Strawberries“Partnering with Plenty for the launch of the Richmond Farm allows us to bring our premium strawberries closer to consumers in the Northeast, the largest berry consumption region in the U.S.,” said Soren Bjorn, Driscoll’s CEO. “By combining our 100 years of farming expertise and proprietary varieties along with Plenty’s cutting-edge technology, we can deliver the same consistent flavor and quality our customers love—now grown locally. This new innovative farm is a powerful step forward in continuing to drive category growth in new ways for our customers and consumers.”

Preben Elnef will assume program leadership from April 2024, and will be responsible for all aspects of the project, including the factory’s construction and opening. He takes on this new role after three years with the company’s Vietnam business, where he established an operating unit and oversaw the construction of the company’s second new factory, which is scheduled to begin production in 2025.

Preben has worked for the LEGO Group for the past 10 years and brings extensive experience leading large-scale investment projects and expertise in engineering, supply chain, and facilities management in both the private and public sector.

We are proud to welcome Plenty to the Commonwealth and thank the company for further advancing the Controlled Environment Agriculture industry in Virginia.”

The 100-acre site will be located in the Meadowville Technology Park. Virginia successfully competed with North Carolina and Georgia for the project, which will create 63 new jobs.

“Securing Cartograf’s first operation in the United States is a significant win for Virginia and is a strong testament to the outstanding global connectivity that we offer manufacturers of all sizes,” said Governor Northam. “By locating in the greater Richmond region, Cartograf will have access to major markets and the Port of Virginia, which will support the company’s continued growth for years to come. $150-Million-Capital-One-Data-Center-in-Meadowville-2013-10-01

Capital One Financial Corporation has completed construction of a $150 million data center in Meadowville in Chesterfield County, Virginia.

The Richmond-Times Dispatch is reporting Amazon is making new investments at its Chesterfield Fulfillment Center.

Online retailer Amazon.com is completing work this year at its Chesterfield County distribution center that will increase the plant’s inventory capacity, a regional director for the company said Tuesday.

The Seattle-based retailer, which opened two large distribution sites in the Richmond area in the fall, also is moving some of the part-time employees it hired during the holiday season into full-time work, said Tim Coates, regional director for Amazon’s fulfillment services.

By summer, “we will have doubled our ability to put inventory in” at the Chesterfield site, Coates told members of the Richmond Association for Business Economics. “We are also putting in more equipment. A lot of investments are happening in that building in Chesterfield.”

The work now occurring at the site includes adding equipment such as an inventory management system that was part of the original plan for the site but was not completed before the holiday shopping season rush, Coates said.

Amazon completed most of the work on the centers in Chesterfield and Dinwiddie counties last year, and the first products were shipped to customers by October.

Each centers is 1 million square feet — or each nearly as big as Short Pump Town Center — but they handle different types of products.

The Chesterfield warehouse ships high volumes of small items such as books and DVDs, Coates said, while the Dinwiddie facility handles larger items such as golf bags, stereos and kayaks.

The two centers employ more than 2,000 people, a spokeswoman said.

Amazon has been expanding its network of fulfillment centers nationwide to get products to its customers “as quickly as possible at the lowest possible price,” said Coates, who also manages Amazon’s Indianapolis fulfillment centers.

“We’re in the Richmond area because it is the best place to be for our customers,” said Coates, whose talk drew a sold-out crowd of 65 for the association’s monthly meeting at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond.

The Richmond-Times Dispatch is reporting Amazon shipped it’s first products from the Chesterfield Fulfillment Center.

Online retailer Amazon.com said Thursday that its fulfillment center in Chesterfield County shipped its first package late Wednesday.

The shipment, a pair of over-prescription shooting glasses for $8.10, went to a customer in Virginia, the company said.

The startup of the Chesterfield plant comes just a week after another new Amazon distribution center in Dinwiddie County shipped its first product — a Crock-Pot slow cooker for $19.99 — to a customer in Michigan.

Amazon said about 750 people have started work at the Chesterfield fulfillment center in Meadowville Technology Park, while about 250 are working at the plant in Dinwiddie Commerce Park.

The company said it expects to hire more people for seasonal jobs at both sites to help fill orders during the holiday season.

Amazon has been taking job applications at the website www.workatamazonfulfillment.com. On Thursday, the site did not list any open jobs in Virginia, but a company spokeswoman said the site will be updated as openings become available.

The Meadowville fulfillment center has 1.1 million square feet of space and ships packages that range from auto parts and consumer electronics to office supplies and books, the company said.

The Dinwiddie plant is 1 million square feet and ships larger items.

Amazon announced plans to open both plants in December. The $135 million investment is expected to create 1,350 jobs.
